Bethany Hamilton, the young amputee surfer from Hawaii, can’t
seem to stay out of the news. She was featured in a news brief in
the July 30 – August 1, 2004 USA Weekend in an article
titled “FX Body Parts,” in which the reporter marveled at modern
prosthetic technology. According to the article, Hamilton’s
prosthetic arm, a graphite and silicone cosmetic model that costs
$45,000, is “so authentic, she can get dirt beneath the
fingernails.”
