In the wake of the death and destruction wrought by Hurricane
Katrina, a nationwide effort is now underway to establish
rehabilitation teams to meet the emerging disabilities and
functional deficits that will surface in the coming weeks, said
Mark A. Young, MD, MBA, FACP. Young, a physiatrist, is working with
“Operation Functional Recovery” of the Katrina Rehabilitation
Humanitarian Project. He also is chair of the International Society
of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM), Exchange
Committee. The project is requesting volunteers from the O&P
community to join with physicians, physical/occupational
therapists, and others. “Based on communication with rehabilitation
professionals and allied medical personnel in the Gulf Coast, we
know that there soon will be many active rehabilitation and
psychological issues demanding intervention,” Young said. “They
include limb amputation, pain management, traumatic injuries, and
anoxic injuries.”
