BOC’s Response to O&P EDGE’s December 30, 2005 Release

The following press release was sent out by the BOC on January 3rd, 2006:

The information contained in O&P Edge's December 30, 2005 release is inaccurate, and unfortunately, BOC was not provided an opportunity to respond prior to publication [Editor's note: The O&P EDGE attempted unsuccessfully to contact BOC for comment by e-mail and phone before the original release was posted]. Despite these allegations, to preserve confidentiality, BOC is unable to fully elaborate; however, a Board meeting was held on December 17-18, and several of the Board members took exception to majority action and resigned.

Now come these accusations, by an unnamed source perhaps one of the unhappy former Board members; which is contrary to the norms of professional conduct and confidentiality pledged by each member of the Board. BOC has a strict confidentiality policy which is permanent and continues after resignation and/or term expiration. The purpose of confidentiality is to allow and protect committees and boards to conduct honest discussions and express differences of opinion without repercussions.

Those who breached confidentiality have attempted to hurt the organization, but more importantly, may have harmed individual certificants who have come to trust and rely on their hard-earned professional certification. We urge the O&P community to evaluate this manipulative tactic.

The future of BOC is NOT in question, as the article tries to state. Consider these facts:

Thousands have renewed their BOC certifications for 2006; Hundreds of candidates are currently registered to take BOC certification exams in February (next month); Four new Board members were elected by the certificant body to serve 4-year terms beginning January 1, 2006; An experienced Board member was re-elected to her second 4-year term; New committees have been appointed by Interim Chair, JR Brandt; and, BOC remains focused and committed to its mission. Additionally, Dr. Donald O. Fedder, CEO since BOC's inception in the early 1980's, has announced his intention to retire in 2006. To facilitate a smooth transition, in a vote of confidence, the Board has asked him to Chair the Corporate Relocation/Transition Committee.
