Don Moore Passes

Don Moore, O&P1, Waterloo, Iowa, died Sunday, March 12, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home of cancer. He was 54.

He will be greatly missed by family members, friends, and colleagues.

Agnes Curran, CP, now with OPGA in Waterloo, Iowa, worked with Mr. Moore for several years. She fondly recalls him as a mentor that helped her move up to the next level of clinical excellence.

In a moving tribute to Mr. Moore on the OANDP-L listserve, she described him as "My CAD/CAM guru for the C-fab of O&P1. We met at a time when I was learning where the 'on' button was on the computer...in the mid-90s...He mastered the computer, clearly demonstrating that this new tool was extraordinarily accurate when placed in the correct hands. Very patiently, he sat with me, one-on-one many an hour, teaching me and allowing me to fail. Don was always there to pick me up.

"The knowledge he taught came at the point in my career that allowed for the more advanced socket technologies to be fit successfully on our patients," she continued. "This man directly contributed, on a national level, to a higher quality of patient care in our industry. Yet, he did so quietly, behind the scenes. [He was] one that did not look for the limelight. Thanks Don."

Mr. Moore, a transtibial amputee due to a water-skiing accident in 1969, loved bicycling. He rode across Iowa in several of the The Des Moines Register's annual bike rides across the state, a distance of more than 470 miles. Known as RAGBRAI® (the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa TM ), the event is noted as the longest, largest, and oldest touring bicycle ride in the world.

Don Moore was born February 9, 1952, in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, the son of Herbert and Theresa Ducharme Moore. He married Sandy Sell in 1995.

Mr. Moore moved to Moncks Corner, South Carolina, and graduated from Berkeley High School, according to an obituary in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier March 14. He attended college in Chicago, Illinois.

He is survived by his wife; two sons: Alan and his wife Becky, Waterloo; Tim of Moncks Corner; two stepsons: Shawn and his wife Melanie Neidick, Naples, Florida; and Ryan and his wife Lori Neidick of Traer, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Dylan and Sam Moore, Hanna Moore, Logan and Austin Neidick, Kyle Neidick and Michelle Neidick; his parents of Moncks Corner; and a brother Earl and his wife Evelyn of Moncks Corner. He was preceded in death by another brother, Richard.

Services were March 15 at the Cedar Valley Community Church, with burial in the Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery.
