Muddy Buddy Brings ‘Good Dirty Fun’ to San Jose

The 8th Annual Land Rover Certified Muddy Buddy Ride and Run Series is invading the hills of San Jose, California, bringing "good dirty fun for the whole family" to Bay Area residents. The unique trail running and biking race will take place in the Joseph D. Grant State Park at 8:30 AM June 11.

The Land Rover Certified Muddy Buddy competition involves teams of two traversing a six-mile obstacle course of hay bales, cargo nets, climbing walls, and monkey bars. At the start of the race, one team member will run and one will ride a bike, switching roles at each obstacle: the rider drops the bike, completes the obstacle, and begins running. The runner soon arrives, completes the obstacle, finds his or her bike, and begins riding. The teams continue leapfrogging each other through the obstacle course, switching offbetween riding and running. This adventure culminates with a custom-built, 50-foot long, sloppy, sticky mud pit that the pairs must crawl through togetherhence the name, "Muddy Buddy."

"This unique trail running and biking race is sure to be fun and challenging for anyone," said John Smith, co-owner of Land Rover Certified Muddy Buddy. "Beginning athletes and experienced racers alike have a great time along the course and through the obstacles, especially in the infamous mud pit."

Leading the way to a good time at this zany event is an equally zany duo, Scott Kochaney and Gordon Jackson, otherwise known as Team Tiki Man. Out of deep affection for the series, the two suburban Chicago, Illinois, natives, fathers, and self-declared professional software geeks, have taken it upon themselves to fly around the country participating in all eight Land Rover Certified Muddy Buddy events.

Donning official Team Tiki Man jerseys, new Fila running shoes from the official footwear sponsor, and riding a Specialized mountain bike, this dedicated duo will christen the festivities with a crawl through the mud pit. Fellow airline travelers need not worryTeam Tiki Man does take time to shower before flying to the next race.

The weekend festivities include a festival-like atmosphere with sponsor booths, food and drinks, such as the Redhook Beer Garden, which will provide free beer for all participants 21 and older, and other activities. Prizes will be raffled offat the end of the awards ceremony, including a 2006 Specialized Rockhopper, it was announced.

Those wishing to race against Team Tiki Man in San Jose, or one of the other race locations, simply need to grab a mudslinging partner and register online for the event at www.muddybuddy.com . Participants must be at least 14 to participate in the Land Rover Certified Muddy Buddy race, but there is fun for the whole family with the Mini Muddy Buddy Series, which takes place directly after each race. Kids have the opportunity to experience a shortened version of the race with a sprint over and under obstacles and through the mud pit. Signups are available on race day, and kids do not have to have a partner to participate.

A portion of the series proceeds go toward the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF), Del Mar, California, a partner to the event. The CAF is dedicated to reaching out to people with physical disabilities by helping them pursue a more active lifestyle through physical fitness and competitive sports. Over the years, the Muddy Buddy Series has raised more than $20,000 to buy prostheses, hand cycles, and racing wheelchairs for athletes.

The event also was held in Orlando, Florida, May 13.
