Bloorview Kids Rehab Moves to New Site

Bloorview Kids Rehab has a new home and a new name.

Formerly called the Bloorview MacMillan Children's Centre, Bloorview Kids Rehab now has a new six-floor, 353,000-sq. ft. home in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The new facility was "designed to fit kids with disabilities and their families: it sets groundbreaking standards for accessibility and draws on the natural beauty and restorative nature of the neighboring ravine," according to the center. "This will be a space where children can explore, interact, and learn in an exhilarating environment, a place that recognizes the wholeness and promise of every child," the center states on its website.

For the first time, programs and services at the hospital's MacMillan site and the Bloorview site are being brought together under one roof. The services from the former MacMillan site have moved into the new facility at 150 Kilgour Road in Toronto, with the services at the Bloorview site expected to move in August.

Bloorview MacMillan Children's Centre is Canada's largest children's rehabilitation hospital. The Bloorview Research Institute, Canada's only hospital-based children's rehabilitation research operation, will work alongside the award-winning creative and therapeutic arts programs, the Bloorview School, and a 24-hour hospital service that includes family accommodation suites. "Our ambition is nothing less than to make the new home of Bloorview Kids Rehab a national centre of excellence for pediatric rehabilitation, expanding its influence and reach," the center states. "Our vision of creating a setting where kids with disabilities can learn to find their rightful, equal, and fulfilling place in the world is becoming a reality."

In 2002, the rehab center partnered with the University of Toronto to become Canada's first teaching hospital in children's rehabilitation. Each year, more than 6,500 children and their families from Ontario and beyond use the hospital, outpatient, and community services. More than 300 children receive intensive, inpatient rehabilitation for an average of six weeks and up to a year following traumatic accidents, illnesses, and surgeries. Outpatient visits total about 51,000 a year, according to the center.
