Ossur Wins Frost & Sullivan Award

Ossur has won the Frost & Sullivan 2006 Frost & Sullivan Award for Medical Devices Technology Innovation of the Year for its innovative Bionic Technology platform and family of products, Frost & Sullivan has announced.

This is the second straight year Ossur has been honored with this award. In 2005 Ossur took the same award for its first Bionic Technology product, the RHEO KNEE ® . The 2006 award honors Ossur's entire and expanded Bionic Technology platform that now includes two additional ground-breaking prostheses that represent a seamless fusion of electronics, mechanics, and human physiology, Ossur noted.

"With the RHEO KNEE and POWER KNEE TM , the prosthesis calculates the motion needed for a more natural step, and the user executes it without true intervention," said Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Shantayan Panda. "Similarly, the PROPRIO FOOT TM , the newest prosthetic solution to use Bionic Technology by Ossur, is capable of adjusting to the terrain on which the user is walking, providing a more natural range of motion as well as more fluid flexion and extension. The result is performance that improves with every step."

Panda continued, "The prostheses using Bionic Technology by Ossur have received an overwhelmingly positive response from both physicians and patients. There is a distinct rehabilitational benefit to using these prostheses, not only in improving mobility and safety during walking, but also in reducing the comorbidities associated with amputees, such as back pain, other muscle strain on the rest of the body, and wear on other joints."

Bionic Technology combines three synergistic technologies that promote advanced and more natural locomotion: sensor technology, artificial intelligence, and actuator technology, Ossur explained. "The advanced sensors detect key metrics such as changes in load and angle, and also determine the type and angle of surface being navigated. This data is fed to the artificial intelligence software, which determines the precise motion needed for the next step in the gait. The three-step processsensing, thinking, and actingemployed by devices built on the Bionic Technology platform results in motion that is smoother, more natural, and safer for the user.

"Beginning with the RHEO KNEE and continuing through the POWER KNEE and the PROPRIO FOOT, Bionic Technology by Ossur consists of an entire suite of prostheses that adapt to and learn from the user, rather than the other way around," the company continued. "These devices work in cooperation with the human body, rather than independently of it, and reduce the physical and mental strain on the amputee while increasing the level of safety of the device."

Taking innovation to the next level, Ossur is also looking at combining these prostheses with more advanced osseointegration, and possibly neurointegration, to truly reconnect with the human body and promote more natural control of the devices, the company said.
