BOC Board Elects Officers, Announces 2007 Goals

The Board for Orthotist/Prosthetist Certification (BOC) Board of Directors elected new officers and members during a Board meeting January 12-14 in Baltimore, Maryland.

A moment of silence was observed during the meeting for Board Member Rex Bowman, BOCO, CPed, who died on December 25, 2006.

New Board Officers Chair: Teresa Alpert-Leibman, BOCO, CPed Vice chair: Preston Madler, BOCO Secretary: Kim Hertz, BOCO, CMF Treasurer: Polly-Jo Hightower, BOCO, CMF Member-at-large: Mark Collins BOCPO, CPed Newly Elected Board Members Scott R. Baranek, BOCP, Bay City, Michigan Kimberly Hertz, BOCO, CMF, Hawthorne, New Jersey Preston Madler, BOCO, San Antonio, Texas. Leaving the Board after years of service include the following: Melinda Janowitz, COF, CMF, who served as an officer and committee volunteer from 2003-2006; Paul Webber, BOCPO, who served as an officer and committee volunteer from 1997-2005, in addition to coming back to fill officer positions in 2006; and Donna Flippin, who served as public member in 2006. Additionally, Harry "JR" Brandt, BOCO, served as an officer, including chair, and committee volunteer from 1996-2006. Brandt will stay on the Board in an ex-officio advisory position in 2007.

Agenda for 2007 During the meeting, the BOC Board reviewed progress on last years goals and set a new agenda for 2007, said BOC Director of Communication Trisha Tatam. Achievements noted in 2006 include achieving Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Deemed Status for BOC Facility Accreditation and expanding accreditation to include all DMEs; and a new Pathways program created to enhance career advancement for those in the O&P field. "With BOC guidance and course recommendations specifically outlined, this BOC Pathways will guide certificants to a higher level of professionalism," said Tatam. Additionally, the new BOCped program was implemented in 2006; the exam is being created and will be offered for the first time in May 2007. Tatam also noted that the BOC office moved in September 2006 to Columbia, Maryland, and BOC CEO Donald O. Fedder, DrPH, retired in July.

The weekend Board meeting featured two speakers. Bill Hogan, vice president of Marketing and Business Products, Applied Measurement Professionals Inc., directed the Board in a strategic planning session, including new marketing concepts. Applied Measurement Professionals Inc., Lenexa, Kansas, provides certification organizations, governmental agencies, associations, and private industry with psychometric consultation, testing and measurement, association management, and publishing services.

Peter V. Berns, executive director, Maryland Nonprofits, presented an afternoon session on Board Excellence, an award-winning program originated by Maryland Nonprofits. In addition, the Board met in subcommittees for various discussions, decisions, and motions to maintain the integrity of the BOC exam process, Tatam added.

Future goals discussed included marketing the new programs and CMS Deemed Status, establishing the BOCped exam by May, and partnering with accrediting facilities to make the task more efficient, less expensive, and finished by the CMS deadline for competitive bidding for facilities in CMS Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), Tatam said.
