Snowboard Championship Set March 31-April 7

The 2007 United States of America Snowboard Association (USASA) National Championship will be held March 31-April 7 at Northstar-at-Tahoe, Nevada, Adaptive Action Sports (AAS) recently announced.

Since 2000, the Adaptive Division of USASA has provided opportunities for athletes with permanent physical disabilities to compete in adaptive snowboard/ski competition. The events available to adaptive snowboarders are: Slalom, Giant Slalom, Boardercross, Halfpipe, and Slopestyle, according to AAS Winter Program Director Lucas Grossi. Adaptive skiers may compete in all events except for Slalom and GS.

This event is open to adaptive athletes from other countries as well as the United States and is open to riders of all skills levels, Grossi said. "You do not have to qualify in a Regional Series to compete in the adaptive class," Grossi added. "This is a unique opportunity for you to ride with some of the best adaptive riders in the world and share time with the adaptive shred community."

Grossi continued, "AAS has truly stepped up the caliber of this event. AAS will be sponsoring athletes again this year for a portion of the cost of competition fees, lodging, and ground transportation. Please stay tuned for future details."

According to AAS, to sign up and get set for the event, participants must:

Join USASA. Membership is $70 US. "This is a yearly fee so make sure you sign up even if you attended Nationals last season," Grossi said. "Go to www.usasa.org and click on the 'join' button and follow the steps to become a USASA member. On the application, make sure you check the 'adaptive' box. Also, if you have not competed in your regional series then sign up under the 'Mt. Hood Series.' Do not forget to write down your temporary code number." Buy an airline ticket to the Reno/Tahoe International Airport, since this is the one to be used for this event. "The USASA Nationals are March 31-April 7," said Grossi. "Arrival is on March 31; plan your arrival between 10 AM-noon or 3-6 PM, if possible. We will run two shuttles on arrival and departure day. Departure is April 7; plan your departure for the morning before noon, if possible. Look on www.usasa.org under the 'Nationals' button for discount airline tickets. AAS will provide ground transportation to Northstar from the airport." Adaptive Action Sports has a new website: www.adaptivereactionsports.org
