Release of Pistorius Report Delayed

The release of the International Association of Athletics Federation's (IAAF) report concerning the fate of amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius' bid to compete in the 2008 Beijing Olympics has been delayed temporarily, Reuters news service reported.

The IAAF was originally slated to release the report by Professor Peter Bruggeman on Thursday, January 10, but that date has been pushed back until Monday in order to give Pistorius a chance to respond to the findings. Pistorius responded on Friday, January 11, saying that he will "appeal at the highest levels" should the IAAF bar him from competition, according to the Associated Press (AP).

Remarks made recently by Bruggeman to the German newspaper Die Welt suggest the man dubbed the "blade runner" will be disappointed.

Brueggemann told the newspaper that, based on his research, Pistorius "has considerable advantages over athletes without prosthetic limbs who were tested by us." Pistorius worked with Brueggemann in Cologne during two days of testing in November. Brueggemann was trying to determine if the J-shaped, carbon-fiber "Cheetah" extensions to his amputated legs were an advantage over the legs of able-bodied runners.

Pistorius said he was disturbed that Brueggemann had spoken of the results before he had received them himself and "can only wonder as to his motivation and who facilitated this action."

Pistorius' manager, Peet van Zyl, said he could take the case as far as the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland. If Pistorius is banned from the Beijing Games, he will continue fighting for inclusion at future Olympics, van Zyl said.

"I feel that it is my responsibility, on behalf of myself and all other disabled athletes, to stand firmly and not allow one organization to inhibit our ability to compete using the very tools without which we simply cannot walk, let alone run," Pistorius told the AP.
