The Orthotic & Prosthetic Assistance Fund (OPAF) and the First Clinics hosted several events in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. In conjunction with the March 4-7 annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (the Academy), OPAF hosted its Thranhardt Golf Classic, First Bid Live and Silent Auction featuring O&P art, a First Volley Adaptive Tennis Clinic, and a First Swing/Learn to Golf Clinic.
The Thranhardt Golf Classic was held at the Celebrity Golf Club International, which also hosted the First Swing/Learn to Golf Clinic. Though Atlanta experienced snow that week, OPAF reported that “the Thranhardt golfers declared the event a success and, as always, a good time was had by all.” The First Swing/Learn to Golf clinic, a program of the National Amputee Golf Association, was led by First Swing instructor Dan Cox and his brother, Patrick Cox. The program hosted both upper- and lower-limb amputees as well as children with physical challenges. The golf course allowed clinic participants to try their new skills on both the driving range and the golf course.
OPAF’s First Volley Tennis Clinic, led by First Volley instructor Marie Vanasse, CP, drew in more than 25 attendees and participants, and offered continuing education credits for credentialed individuals who volunteered, observed, or participated in the clinic.
OPAF’s First Bid Live and Silent Auction was OPAF’s primary fundraising event during the Academy meeting. Attendees were offered traditional Southern fare, including pulled-pork sandwiches, Vidalia onion rings, pimento cheese spread, and chips with peach salsa. First Bid also offered items from its Art in O&P exhibit, with artwork from amputees as well as artwork produced by O&P practitioners and others within the O&P community. Offerings included photography, hardwood carvings, and other original artwork, some produced by children who were members of Camp No Limits, Live Oak, Florida. During the live auction, bidders took home a variety of high-value items, including opportunities to vacation in Maui, Florida, Vermont, and Costa Rica.
