The American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (the Academy) has elected new executive officers and two new members to its board of directors for the 2009-2010 membership year.
President-Elect: Scott D. Cummings, PT, CPO, FAAOP
Scott D. Cummings is employed by Next Step O&P in Manchester, New Hampshire, where he provides patient care in private practice. He graduated from Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts, with a bachelor of science degree in physical therapy prior to completing his orthotic and prosthetic education at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1984.
This is Cummings’ sixth year on the Academy board of directors, where he currently serves as vice-chair of the Research Council and as the Academy’s liaison to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). He has served as a member of the steering committee for the O&P Outcomes Initiative and is a past president of the New England chapter of the Academy.
Vice President: Mark D. Muller, CPO, FAAOP
Mark D. Muller graduated from the State University of New York (SUNY), Stony Brook, in 1993 with a bachelor of science degree in material science and engineering. He began his prosthetic and orthotic career by volunteering at Eastern O&P Labs, Long Island, New York, where he soon became the lead prosthetic technician. In 1995, Muller completed both the Orthotic and Prosthetic Certificate programs at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois. Immediately after, he became an instructor of orthotic education for Northwestern.
Muller then became a clinician for the La Jolla, California, office of SCOPe Orthotics & Prosthetics in 1997. Within three years, he was promoted to office manager while maintaining a full clinical load. He then pursued what the Academy calls “his passion for engineering and education” by joining Össur Americas in 2000. Over the next few years he worked in both their technical services and research-and-development departments. He later served as a clinical prosthetist/orthotist and implemented numerous educational and clinical projects, including the very successful online-education platform of the Össur Academy. In January 2006, Muller joined the California State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) prosthetics and orthotics program as an instructor of prosthetic education. He currently lives in Mission Viejo, California, with his wife, Kate DeYoung-Muller, CPO, and their three sons.
Treasurer: Bruce “Mac” McClellan, CPO, LPO, FISPO
“Mac” McClellan holds degrees in prosthetics, orthotics, and health administration, and received his prosthetic training at Northwestern University. He served an orthotic internship at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital, Downey, California. Professionally, he has practiced at Hanger Orthotics & Prosthetics, Orthomedics, and at Rancho Los Amigos as a staff orthotist and intern/residency instructor. He set up and launched the prosthetic and orthotic education program at the Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Texas, and served there as director and assistant professor for nearly five years. Following that, he directed the orthotic and prosthetic department at Dallas Rehabilitation Institute, Texas.
Today, McClellan is in private practice as president and owner of Prosthetic-Orthotic Associates of East Texas, Tyler. He has served on numerous state, national, and international boards and committees, chairing a number of them. He is a fellow of the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) and has served as its U.S. vice chair. He is a past president of the Academy’s Texas chapter. He has lectured frequently across the United States and has authored and co-authored a number of published articles and professional papers.
Member of the Board of Directors: Kevin Carroll, MS, CP, FAAOP
Kevin Carroll has worked for more than 30 years as a prosthetist, researcher, and educator. As vice president of Prosthetics for Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics, Bethesda, Maryland, Carroll travels nationally and internationally to treat patients, present scientific symposia, and manage clinics for unique and challenging prosthetics cases.
Carroll began practicing in Ireland in 1978 at the National Medical Rehabilitation Center, Dublin. He moved to the United States in 1984. He is a member of the ISPO and the British Association of Prosthetics and Orthotics (BAPO), and the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers.
According to the Academy, Carroll’s guiding philosophy is simple: people first. He believes that truly listening to each patient’s thoughts, concerns, and personal goals allows him to appreciate that patient’s unique situation and develop the most effective prosthetic solutions to suit his or her needs.
Carroll’s hobbies include listening to and playing music, building sport prosthetic systems for challenged athletes, and cheering those athletes on. Mary, his wife of 24 years, is a practicing physical therapist, and his son is attending the J. E. Hanger College of Prosthetics & Orthotics at St. Petersburg College, Florida. His daughter is in her final year of high school.
Member of the Board of Directors: Phil Stevens, MEd, CPO, FAAOP
Phil Stevens has been in O&P since graduating from the University of Washington, Seattle, in 2001. He has written extensively for peer-reviewed publications, including the Journal of Prosthetics and Orthotics (JPO), Prosthetics and Orthotics International, and the Journal of Craniofacial Surgery. He has also contributed to The O&P EDGE, The Academy Today, and Advance for Directors for Rehabilitation on a wide variety of industry topics.
He is a regular speaker at both chapter and national Academy meetings and has been on the faculty of two of the Academy’s certificate programs, Pediatric Orthotics and Evidence Based Practice: Justifying Patient Care. In addition, he has actively supported the ISPO as a speaker at conferences in both Canada and the Dominican Republic and is currently active in the consensus conference, Recent Developments in Healthcare for Cerebral Palsy: Implications and Opportunities for Orthotics, held last summer in Oxford, England.
He is currently serving within the Academy as a member of both the Research Education Committee and the Clinical Content Committee for the Academy’s annual meeting and scientific symposium.
