Winter, a bottlenose dolphin who lost her tail flukes after a near-fatal entanglement in a crab-trap line, has been featured on international media, starred in a documentary, and serves as inspiration to children and adults who visit her at her home at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) in Clearwater, Florida. Now, Winter and the prosthetic tail she wears are the subject of a children’s book by New York Times bestselling children’s authors Craig, Isabella, and Juliana Hatkoff.
Winter’s Tail: How One Little Dolphin Learned to Swim Again, tells the story of Winter’s accident, her rescue, her long recovery, and the work performed by caregivers including Kevin Carroll, MS, CP, FAAOP, vice president of prosthetics for Hanger Orthopedic Group, Bethesda, Maryland, and Dan Strzempka, CPO, that meant that Winter could swim with a prosthetic tail.
