The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced that Round 2 of the Medicare Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies (DMEPOS) Competitive Bidding Program will go into effect for Medicare beneficiaries on July 1, 2013. The program will expand, concurrently, from nine metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) to 91 MSAs.
Orthotics and prosthetics are not subject to Round 2 competitive bidding.
The payment amounts from the supplier competition for Round 2 of the program are projected to result in average savings of 45 percent as compared to the current fee schedule prices, according to CMS. The payment amounts for the national mail-order program for diabetic testing supplies are projected to result in average savings of 72 percent. The national mail-order competition will be implemented at the same time and will include all parts of the United States, including the 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa.
