Kevin Carroll, MS, CP, FAAOP, Hanger Clinic, Austin, Texas, vice president of prosthetics, was recently honored by the National Meningitis Association (NMA) for his work treating meningitis survivors, many of whom lose limbs as a result of the potentially fatal disease. He was presented with the NMA’s Nancy Ford Springer Inspiration Award on April 27 at the association’s “Give Kids a Shot!” Gala in New York.
NMA was founded by Nancy Ford Springer in 2002. After her son, Nick, survived meningococcal disease, she was committed to helping individuals and families affected by the disease. The organization helps to increase awareness of the disease and vaccination rates.
“Nick lost his legs and hands to meningitis, and when he was comatose in the hospital recovering, Kevin was there measuring him to fit prosthetics,” said Gary Springer, husband of the late Nancy Springer, and NMA Gala chair. “When he awoke he realized his limbs were gone, but I assured him that Kevin and his team were going to provide him with prosthetics to walk again. That was the one thing that reassured him during this difficult time.”
“I am extremely grateful to be the recipient of the Nancy Ford Springer Inspiration Award-this is such an honor,” said Carroll. “It is a privilege to work with those who have survived meningococcal disease. Witnessing their strength and determination is an inspiration to me, and one of the most rewarding parts of my job.”
