The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released a public data set with information on durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS) products and services that were ordered by physicians and other healthcare professionals for Medicare beneficiaries in calendar year 2013. The data contains information on utilization, payment (allowed amount and Medicare payment), and submitted charges organized by National Provider Identifier (NPI), Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) code, and supplier rental indicator. This is based on information from CMS administrative claims data for Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in the fee-for-service (FFS) program available from the CMS Chronic Condition Data Warehouse and contains final-action (i.e., all claim adjustments have been resolved) Part B noninstitutional DMEPOS line items for the Medicare FFS population.
The data is available in two formats, a tab delimited file format that must be imported into a database or statistical software (the required read-in language is included in the download ZIP package) and an interactive format that allows the data to be filtered, sorted, and exported. CMS has also provided three summary aggregate tables, which are organized by National Provider Identifiers, and by Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System codes for both states and on a national basis.
