Original post:  Working with a lady whose husband wants “the most realistic finish to her leg possible”…including split toe at the great toe for sandal wear & the appearance of toe nails. She is very thin & concerned about the added weight of spray-on skins. I would like to be able to access components, if necessary, without cutting & ruining a spray-on skin. Thoughts & recommendations appreciated. Not an insurance issue.

*I would have the discussion regarding limb loss-sounds like patient (husband)has not come to terms with this. Â We aren’t limb replacers- we provide prosthesis to help people to regain mobility. Â Would definitely stay away from a rubber sprayed on skin – definitely setting yourself up for failure when it’s time to reveal it. Â Maybe have a discussion with the amputee with out the husband around find out what she wants- that’s what matters! Â CPO

*Â We tend to use Skinergy (Steeper) – not the MOST realistic looking cover, but offer sandal toe and tend to work out quite well. Otherwise custom silicone jobs are an option, but increased weight. Â Â CPO
*The skinergy covers are very realistic. I silicone the proximal edge down (requires 24 hours drying) and trim. No other adhesive works very well. To access components, carefully “skin†proximal edge back and reflect the sleeve. Reglue etc. It is a silicone product so it does have some weight but nothing crazy. CPO
*These guys are really good and make the process very easy for the treating practitioner.Â

*Try the skin out of France, it is called Aqualeg. Best looking skin I have ever seen. Many colors, tattoos, anything a person may want. CPO/L
*We use a lot of dreamskin covers over the top of plastizote filled in finishes. You could leave the plastizote not glued together and finish it and then cover it with the skin (which can be removed) kind of a pain once you super glue top edge, but can be removed to access the componentry. Â CPO
*Have you looked at silicone? Very life like and light weight.

* I believe DAW has the only split toe with nails.
And they are not all that great. Â Â Â Â
*1. You can glue and soldering iron blend a roll on skin to the foot shell just behind the toes. (Alps the one I have used most but others work.)
2. Acrylic nails look great on most foot shells and you can usually find a nail salon that is thrilled to do it.3. You can “paint†the forefoot/toes to better match skin/patient, but when you are not doing a full spray on skin I find it does not hold up well.
