AFO for Non Ambulatory

Kassie Harnden

Good Morning- We have had several Medicaid patients in for new AFOs recently- these managed Medicaid programs for Nebraska, only one of them requires prior auth, the other 2 do not. We tend to follow Medicare guidelines for all insurances when it comes to LCD and coverage for Custom AFOs. Medicare LCD states L1970/L1960 is not covered for patients who are non-ambulatory. What are clinics using for AFOs for patients who do need the structure and custom fit of a true custom AFO for non-ambulatory patients? For example, extreme ankle contractures but can be manually corrected. Need to provide appropriate alignment of foot and ankle for daily use in stander. Thank you in advance for your responses.
