Prosthetic soft goods delivered to a patient in a custodial care facility (prosthetic socks and shrinkers)

John Craig

Dear list –          I am trying to find documentation on Medicare Part B coverage concerning prosthetic soft goods delivered to a patient in a custodial care facility (prosthetic socks and shrinkers).        My understanding is that I can bill Medicare Part B the prosthesis and components,  but not prosthetic socks and shrinkers because they are considered supplies.      I found in the Medicare manual where I can’t bill Medicare B for supplies, but a Medicare employee stated that I can bill those items to Medicare and that Medicare will pay for them.   She said supplies are like healing creams, alcohol, etc.       That has not been my experience in the past;  however, it has been a while since I’ve done this.    Your comments are appreciated – better if supported by documentation that I can reference.     John G. Craig, CPO/LPO  (TX)
