The second round of asking for assistance in looking for information into the Lyon Scoliosis Orthosis is going well and I will post what I have thus far (See Below) and will post the remaining information as it comes in.
Thanks to all those who have replied thus far and to those who are searching for information. I plan on speaking to one of the responders soon once I set up a time to do so.
I hope to gain an “OK” from the people providing this information and ask if I can post the information on my website that I am building. The site is related to O&P and I hope to have it up soon. There is only one final obstetrical before it goes live. Again, the information that is provided is helping me with my resident research and hope to pass it along to others who are seeking this information for research.

I spent the last 3 years living in Grenoble France which is about 45 minutes from Lyon. My very close friends in Grenoble have a teenage son who was braced for scoliosis (I am not sure if he was discharged yet). I think, after attending a lecture at the Academy meeting, that the Orthotist in Grenoble was using this design.
If you write down some specific questions I can ask my friends to talk to the French Orthotist and see if we can get some answers for you. Perhaps he can send some pictures or even some braces. He has been treating scoliosis in France for 25-30 years and is very good at what he does.
I also have a contact in Ruen (outside of Paris) who does a lot of scoliosis.
I didn’t work while living there because my son has Aspergers and needed a lot of support while living in a new country, learning a new language.

Jose, Between June of 2001 untill June of 2004 I had the pleasure of working at Leconte Ortho. in Lyon ,France. Leconte holds the claim as the innovator of the Lyon type TLSO although it was in use in Lyon before the father of the present owner,Cyril Lecante, traveled to N.Y. in the 60’s and discovered the use of the orange thermo form plastic, which is a toxic,
and replaced the leather base with this Plastic. I believe its called Kydel ? I have used it for rigid foot orthotics back in the 70’s. Now they use a High density Poly Ethlyene, which can be cold formed for minor adjustments with a hammer and also use a type of orangeish color Vivac that is more translucent and easy to heat & adjust.
This TLSO is used on high degree curves , I’d say 35 degrees and more, that have shown correction after being in a Risser Plaster TLSO, non removable , formed on a Risser table, worn for several weeks. There are windows cut out in this plaster cast for airation. After a reasonable correction in the plaster , the kids were measured either by a plaster cast or cad cam and the plaster quickly placed back on . The Lyonnais were usually fitted the following day and delivered on the kid the next. This was the technique at Les Massues Rehab. Center in Lyon. Of course, for the lesser curves there were a number of less aggressive TLSO’s used.
As far as the fabrication, I have taken a good number of photo’s of the step by step method. Also, I do have parts needed to construct one. It is an extremely adjustable orthosis of the height, the thoracic and lumbar control ‘hands’ and the auxilla control extensions. I do have several used orthosis and have donated one to Northwestern Univ.Orthotic -Prosthetic School.. I remember responding to a similar request a year or so ago and never heard back. I have worked with easily a hundred of these and even though it’s been several years since I have last worked with one I remember quite a bit and can refer to notes and literature I have, which is in French. I was able to identify one publication which references the Lyon (or “Lyonnaise” Brace) which you may find helpful. It dedicates only a paragraph and a few European journal references, but perhaps this may still be of benefit (please see the attached). This reference is focused more on outcomes, rather than fabrication. I’m also copying this reply to Luke Stikeleather, CO, a colleague who gave an excellent presentation at this year’s Academy meeting on the variety of orthotic designs used, both domestically and in Europe, in the treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. If anyone would have any additional references or information to share on this, my bet would be on Mr. Stikeleather.
I’m disappointed to hear of your experience in trying to glean more information from an orthotist you were able to identify who may have had experience with this orthosis. This may not completely meet your requirements, but hopefully you find it somewhat helpful.
