Pediatric foot orthoses (0-3 yrs of age)

Matthew L. Musket, DPT

Dear Colleagues,

I just subscribed to this terrific site from the advice of my favorite O&P
practicioner, Rick Milen, CP, PTA. I am currently treating a young male (24
months old) for PT, and he was issued a Schmoo to maintain talar neutral and
to prevent the frequency of falls at home at ~ 18months old. Now he
presents with ~10degree hindfood valgus in WB, yet has a proper medial
longitudinal arch in both feet with adequate NM control of his feet without
recent falls nor toe dragging or navicular “hot spots.” My question is:
“What is the latest research to support or to refute the use of foot
orthoses for pediatric patients with the aforementioned feet?” Thank you
for your assistance to me, the family, and the child. Have a great day!
