I just thought I’d share with you all the following post I received from
an internet discussion forum. I was chatting with a young amputee lady
from the UK and discussing the charity Limbs of Love. Thinking she
would find our healthcare system barbaric because of the need for such a
charity, I was surprised to see the following response.
Oh dont get me started about amputee health care in the UK. Its a year
soon since i lost my leg and i still havent got a proper prosthesis!! We
obviously dont have health insurance like in the US and there are very
few prosthesistists within the NHS. At present there is a 9 week waiting
list for prosthetics….so for example i was cast for my new leg at the
beginning of april and by time i returned to collect the leg last week
it just fell straight off because my trauma swellin decreases so
dramatically and they were cross with me because it had wasted so much
NHS money to make the leg for it not to fit….its frustrating!!!….ok
thats my rant over lol 🙂
After reading this post I remain steadfast in my conviction that while
our system is not perfect, it is better than nationalized healthcare. I
would imagine that if we allow governmental healthcare, our visits to
physicians offices would be very similar to other government run
businesses. Our waiting room atmosphere, I fear, would mimic that of
our government-run Post Office and the government-run drivers license
offices (DPS). Just my humble opinion…
