Responses: Stubbies

Below is my post followed by the responses recieved. I was reminded to
check the archives, which are a log of previous posts and is quite easily
searched for specific content. The web address is:

I am looking for suggestions for the costruction (ideal height, as well as
the shape and or size of the “feet” or platforms) of short AK prostheses or
“stubbies”. Petite female, 70 yrs of age, very flexible with good range of
motion and endurance, but limited strength. We will need to make them as light
as possible with a good base of support for functionality.

Responses

We are using flexible plastic to do our stubbies with extra plastic applied
to the bottom to allow a surface for sanding and shaping. We have used as thin
as 3mm and as thick as 6mm (proflex with silicone) and have good results
with this.

I am a student in O&P, and while I can’t help much with construction since I
have never made stubbies, I have been taught that ideal height is such that
the buttocks are at the level of the average chair seat for ease in
transition from standing to sitting and vice versa.

I also recieved another response which was an archive of responses on a
previous Stubbies question. You can find these by searching the archives.

Thanks again,
