re. O and P protocol

Wieland Kaphingst

Hi Marco:

Your proposed structure is impressive. So impressive though, that I have to
assume you are coming form outside of O&P – because there is nearly no
literature in O&P dealing with pathology-based structural indication for O&P
(and/or assistive-, and/or adl-devices) in a way that could satisfy your highly
specific request to a degree.

We (everyone involved with O&P and rehab) would be very happy, however if we
had that available and if we also had an evidence base, providing a clean
choice among several options, which may be available per case.
Payer organizations would love such answers because it would help them
understand functional necessity and functional limitations of devices prescribed
to their clientele.

The closest (and semi-agreed upon) answers that you may be able to receive
are probably available in outcome reports from consensus conferences of the
large (and international) professional groups (as AAOP and ISPO). You would have
to ask them.

You will find well done scientific research on comparative treatment
approach in the periodical publications of those organizations too.

In order to create what you have proposed you will need either a huge budget
and an army of helpers or something close to a life-time of work (and the
results will be outdated once you are done).

On a very small scale (compared to your intentions) you find some related
information in the publications:

“VIETCOT – Prosthetics for the rehabilitation team”
and
“VIETCOT – Orthotics for the rehabilitation team”,

both of them available through the ISPO headquarters in Copenhagen. They
cover the priority needs of O&P in Vietnam and do not claim to provide
scientific proof of evidence – but they are probably a good start.

Best of luck and continuous energy to you!
