Re: Alvin Muilenburg,

Benveniste, David Mark

I too would like to express my appreciation for Mr Muilenburg.

I did my residency at his facility and had the priviledge of his advice,
perspective, and wisdom.

Mr Muilenburg was one of those people in the field that didn’t just work in
the field of prosthetics, but had a passion for prosthetics.

I was lucky enough to have him share with me slides of his world travels
from China to Africa which were always in the context of visiting prosthetic
facilities. That was an education it of itself, and his commentary reflected
his compassion and interest in people and prosthetics worldwide. He remained
interested in new products and his patients even when he cut back
considerably on his work routine in his later years .

After my residency I went to work at the VA where I encountered numerous
patients that Al Muilenburg had worked with and they always commented about
what a good fit they received at his hands. At the same time, I will never
forget the great words of wisdom he shared with me

“Never take too much credit for a good fit, and don’t take too much blame
when it doesn’t fit”

Those seemed like words that trancended prosthetics. No matter how hard you
try, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Don’t let pride get to you
and don’t beat yourself up when things don’t go right.

I still recall those words both when my sockets fit and when, on occasion, I
can’t get a good fit!
Mr Muilenburg gave a lot back to the world. That is what a successful life
looks like to me.

I am very saddened to hear of Al’s passing. I have known and admired him
for
over 30 years
He was a true gentleman and role model to many. He was one of those rare
souls that no one could disparage.

Bon voyage Al, our profession has just lost a true friend.
