ACADEMY NEWS: Findings from Plagiocephaly Conf Shared

The Academy

The findings from the third Clinical Standards of Practice (CSOP) consensus conference have been published as a supplement to the JPO and are currently in the mail.

ORTHOTIC TREATMENT OF DEFORMATIONAL PLAGIOCEPHALY, BRACHYCEPHALY AND SCAPHOCEPHALY was chaired by Deanna Fish, MS, CPO and held at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas.

The Academy’s Craniofacial Society pushed for consideration of the topic and assisted in gathering treatment data via a survey or its members. The survey collected a body of knowledge about specific and generalized treatment programs for this unique patient population.

Fish was pleased the conference topic was given priority. She noted the increased incidence of positional plagiocephaly has been linked to the American Academy of Pediatrics’ 1992 recommendation to place infants in a supine position rather than the traditional prone position for sleeping.

CSOP consensus conferences are a part of the Academy’s Project Quantum Leap, the most ambitious series of activities every undertaken on behalf of the profession and are funded, in part, by contributions from individuals, chapters, suppliers, and a government grant. Additional copies of the findings may be purchased from the Academy by calling 703 836-0788.
