Q&A, cancer in O&P

Mike Calcagno Cpo

Hi List
The questions to me are rolling in, which is great
These seem to be questions a lot of people are asking
1) I forgot this one CUTTING OIL, has been deemed GROUP 1, again, this group
IS cancerous, this one they say is responsible for pancreatic cancer, with a
2% survival rate
2) Fiberglass, carbon composite, etc., go to IARC Monographs type in Man Made
Fibers & help me & others with the answer also check out Mineral Oil.
I don’t know why but I have not gone to the TOXNET site & plugged in carbon
composite (probably, a “chemo moment” )
3) Aluminum, has been categorized as cancerous, somehow as I understand it
changes your DNA structure resulting in tumors, IARC has it ranked GROUP 1
4) It seems the Nickel in the metals is the cancer causing agent
5) A gentleman who’s name is Mark has volunteered to help create a WEB SITE
dedicated to safety in an O&P facility, THOUGHTS, SEND THEM
6) The real bad chemical is BENZENE, this can cause everything from skin
cancer to the blood cancers to cancer of any of the internal organs, this is
nasty stuff take the proper precautions, which should be find alternatives
7) I have not reseaarched which mask filter is to use for which agent but a
place to begin is at a place like Home Depot they have various masks for
various tasks
Finally an awareness moment, In chemo therapy & in a support group I attend,
I am usually the youngest, 50, the people that have contacted me, people I
know in this industry with cancer are for the most part younger then me.
Again THANKS!
Mike
