Jack Engsberg, a researcher at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri is testing a new low-tech method of fitting amputees with prosthetic limbs.
Engsberg and his colleagues believe that they have come up with a way of shortening that design process using an inexpensive gel instead of plaster to make the initial mould. The gel is prepared by mixing an alginate powder with water in a pail. The amputee then puts the limb into the pail of liquid and, within five minutes, the gel sets. Is anybody have experience or more information about this technique? Thanks in advance.
