Hi everyone and Happy Thanksgiving to my US friends!
I have a 7 year old client who was born with fibular hemimelia and had
subsequent Symes surgery. He is wearing a segmented liner and laminated
socket with a Seattle Child’s Play foot. There is (probably) about 1 1/2″
of clearance or leg length discrepancy between the sound and amputation
sides. Mom says he has recently started to ask about swimming prostheses
since he is becoming a little self conscious around the pool when he is not
wearing his prosthesis. He does not swim with this design now. Anyone have
any suggestions? Are there any pediatric ankles available? Would you drill
holes in the socket to allow water to run out? Would you change the design
to a bivalved design? Any ideas?
