Re: Your Thoughts on the current knee joints

Benveniste, David Mark

Dr Zahedi,

I am glad you are raising this issue. I have tried to generate enthusiasm
for a conference to discuss what we really know and understand about knee
dynamics and how this should affect our knee choices.

Perhaps your contribution will create the needed participation to clarify
what we understand, what we need to understand, what information knee
manufacturers should be supplying, how foot dynamics affect the knee
choices, and the role other components such as shock and shock torque pylons
play or should play in the choice of knees and the resulting gait dynamics.

Sincerely,

Subject: [OANDP-L] Your Thoughts on the current knee joints

Dear all,

As you may know, there have been many surveys of prosthetic knee joints
carried out during the last 3 decades. They have been very useful in
identifying areas for new developments. With the introduction of the
microprocessor knee control and advances in materials there have been many
technical opportunities for the design of a new generation of knee joints.
However, despite our in-depth understanding of the biomechanics of
locomotion, there seems to be a need to conduct a further survey to identify
the issues which have not been fully understood. For this reason, I will be
carrying out such a survey in the near future, the details of which will be
posted on this website. In the meantime, I would be delighted to hear from
you if you are interested in taking part and would like me to send details
directly to you.

With best wishes

Saeed Zahedi
