Competitive Bidding

David C. Schultz

AOPA would like to voice its strong opposition to a Medicare
“competitive bidding” program for O&P in any form.  As other messages on
this list have indicated, this proposal is the greatest threat to the O&P
profession to emerge from the federal government in recent memory and every
effort needs to be made to stop this proposal from becoming law.

In order to defeat the Medicare proposal currently before
the U.S. House of Representatives, AOPA will be holding several O&P-only
events with key legislators on the Ways and Means Health Subcommittee and
the Senate Finance Committee next week.  Through these meetings, O&P
practitioners and the industry will have an opportunity in private meetings
to thoroughly explain the perils of the competitive bidding proposal and
“lobby” for a complete exclusion for O&P from this type of program.

!
Additionally, AOPA has been in discussions with key
lawmakers advising them of the adverse impact that competitive bidding will
have on access to O&P patient care as well as the problems it poses for the
quality of care provided to Medicare patients.  We are also using a targeted
grassroots effort to educate key senators and representatives on the
inherent problems with competitive acquisition for O&P services.

I believe with the combined effort of the entire O&P
community, we will have our best opportunity to defeat this proposal.

If you have any questions about how to assist in AOPA’s
lobbying efforts, please contact AOPA’s manager of legislative affairs, Walt
Gorski at
