Tom,
I can’t really offer a comparison of each HIPAA compliance offering because, frankly, some I’ve yet to see come off the drawing board. I can tell you, based on what I’ve heard, the difference between the various products seems to be the amount of effort you have to put into the process in order to be in compliance.
The Academy’s Model HIPAA Compliance Plan comes on a CD and consists of an explanation of the Privacy Standards, a model compliance plan, policies and procedures to be implemented by staff, and the forms needed to comply. The plan was prepared by the law firm of Arent Fox which has developed compliance plans for many other associations. Their approach is to make things very simple, easy to implement (lots of “insert your company’s name here”), and drafted in a way that an administrative assistant could do most of the work.
The Academy also partnered with Healthcare Compliance Solutions, a firm that is totally devoted to helping healthcare organizations meet the demanding government regulations. The principal in the firm is Sheila Press who is available to answer questions or consult with those companies that have unusual circumstances or a more complex situation.
The Academy’s HIPAA Compliance Plan is ready NOW and has already been ordered by many practitioners. The cost is $300 and is available only to Academy members by calling the Alexandria office at (703) 836-0788 ext 210 (Manisha Bhaskar). (Academy Fellows may use their 10% discount
privilege.)

Subject: [OANDP-L] HIPPA Compliance Programs
Hello List
In preparation for HIPPA deadlines, it seems that there are many different “guides” available for O & P. There are programs that can be purchased from AOPA, the Academy, and OPGA. There are seminars put on by AOPA, MOPA (Michigan Orthotic and Prosthetic Association), local law firms and consultants. I’m sure there are more. As far as the industry-specific programs go, I’m not sure if “competing” programs make the best use of our resources; however, I am wondering if anyone has experience or advice with the AOPA, Academy, and OPGA packages.
Yours in compliance,
Tom Heckman C.O.
