ORIGINAL QUESTION
Does anyone have a specific article(s) explaining the
function/benefits/prescription rationale for anterior ground reaction
AFOs? I have searched the Recal Database and JPO online without much
success.
NOTE: All of the articles/chapters referenced in the responses are
listed next, to save you time if you don’t want to read the complete
responses.
Thanks to all who took the time to respond.
Sincerely:
John T. Brinkmann, CPO

RESPONSES
1. Dear John:
You may find this article helpful:
-Use of the Anterior Floor Reaction Orthosis in Patients with
Cerebral Palsy; Harrington, ED, Lin RS, Gage JR: Orthotics and
Prosthetics, Volum 37, no. 4, Winter 1983/84, pg. 34-42.

2. You’ll have to go back to the O & P Journal in the 1960s or early
70s. The
original article on floor reaction (ground reaction) AFOs was done by a
doctor and an orthotist. I think it was Vern Nickols, MD, but I could be
mistaken. Gretchen Hecht, CO (now living in Boise, Idaho)directed me to
it
in the early 80s. She would probably remember the doctor’s name for
sure
(he was first author I think). I think he was at Denver Childrens
Hospital.
It was an excellent article and gave all the basics for their developing
the
design.

3. Write or call Bob Lin, CPO 860-667-5361 I am sure he has done
something on
this. Bill DeToro, CO
4. JPO has an article in Summer 99 Donald Freeman CP etc.

5. You might try the Atlas of Orthotics.

John,
Try these,
Harrington E D, et al, The use of anterior floor reaction orthosis in
patients with cerebral palsy, Orthotic Practice , 1983-84, 37(4), 34-42
Bowker P, et al, Biomechanixal Basis of Orthotic Management, 1993
p104-108
and my essay which I wrote in my 4th year in college.

7. John,
The original article, I believe was written by an Orthotist by the name
of
John Clansy. The article was in the JPO, March of 1972. I have the
journal
somewhere stored at the moment. If I can find it, I would be happy to
copy
and fax it to you.

8. Dear John,
One of the useful article will be:
Harrington, E.D., Lin, R.S., Gage, J.R. (1983). Use of the anterior
floor reaction orthosis
in Patients with cerebral palsy. Orthot Prosthet, 17:4, 34-42.
There is also a chapter in Floor Reaction Orthosis in the Didactic LLO
Manual from the
Northwestern University.
You can also look for the books:
Cusick B. (1990). Progressive casting and splinting for lower extremity
deformities in
children with neuromotor deficit. Tuscan AZ: Therapy Skill Builders.
The Consensus Report on The Lower Limb Orthotic Management of Cerebral
Palsy published by
ISPO in 1994.
Hope these will be useful.
