To my knowledge, AOPA has not encouraged manufacturers/suppliers to bar
code their products. That is a business decision that the company must
make itself. Would business owners/practitioners find bar coding useful?
I could see that bar codes might offer a potential for improving cost
accounting for practices. That potential would need to be weighed against
the cost of putting the bar codes on the product and the likelihood that
companies would use the bar codes if they were there.
The U.S. Congress has been considering a bill for the past couple of years
that would require bar coding of all non-custom products. AOPA has been
very active in ensuring that the requirement applies only to non-custom
devices.
