Mr. Adams,

Years ago, I remember seeing an article on a dog with a prosthesis. As I

recall the leg was made by Albert Rapport from Performance Orthotics &

Prosthetics in Santa Monica, CA. Sorry I don’t have the phone number but

I’m sure it’s available from information (either 213 or 310 area code).

I

don’t believe this is a normal thing for this company but they be of some

help.

Good luck,

Dan

David, I fabricated a prosthesis for a German Shepherd puppy many years

ago. He was a single puppy litter and his mother inadvertently chewed

one of

his hind paws off while cleaning up. Cody walked on his front paws and

the

hind stump and kept his full size hind leg extended behind him. He still

had

the Hock jt, so I had a perfect purchase for a poly PTS socket with

pelite

insert. I did do some sort of strapping arrangement. Keeping little dog

teeth away from it was the biggest problem. What happened was he started

to

weightbear on his sound hind leg. Dogs are remarkably stable on 3 legs.

Since this dog has been walking normally, or perhaps he has been favoring

his

problem leg and already walking 3 legged, I think a prosthesis is

probably

unnecessary. Dogs are far more adaptable than we are. Once Cody started

walking properly, my work was done and the prosthesis really was a chew

toy.

I look forward to your responses. Molly Pitcher CPO
