Prosthetic Center of Excellence, Las Vegas, recently hosted and sponsored a First Things First at the University of Nevada – Las Vegas (UNLV). The workshop on falls and recovery was attended by local therapists and UNLV students pursuing physical therapy as their career choice. Chris Doerger, PT, CP, led the full-day event which covered an introduction to prosthetic componentry and terminology for the students as well as falls and mitigating factors.
The afternoon session brought in over 25 individuals with lower-limb amputations, their families, and others. Participants learned the reverse chain method of getting up from the floor on their own. Discussion included options if getting up is impossible and preparations that can be made in case of falls.
