Investment firm O’Shaughnessy Ventures (OSV) awarded a $100,000 O’Shaughnessy Fellowship to Ian Davis, a product design engineer, to design, develop, and bring to market an affordable prosthetic hand. Davis will incorporate his engineering and real-world experience to improve upon currently available devices. He intends to offer the device as an assembly-required DIY kit, enabling users to assemble, fit, and repair it independently.
In 2019, Davis, who has 28 years of experience operating a fabrication and machine shop, had four fingers on his left hand amputated but was unable to find a prosthetic device that fully met his needs. That experience led him to build a device of his own.
