With an average of 5 percent participation for all studies, cancer studies have the largest participation rate, about 7 percent. In a 2022 Health Information National Trends Survey, data indicated that clinical trials often close prematurely because of “inadequate accrual,” a shortage of participants, but 41 percent of people reported not knowing anything about clinical trials.
Analysis of clinical trial payments across 871 trials in 2023 showed that people in cancer clinical trials were compensated $487.80 on average for participating in a study.1
