The American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (the Academy) has named the recipients of the 2018 Academy awards, which will be presented during the 44th Academy Annual Meeting & Scientific Symposium in New Orleans, February 14-17.
The recipients include the following:
- Gary Bedard, CO, FAAOP, clinical application liaison for Becker Orthopedic, received the Titus-Ferguson award.
- Keith Smith, CO/L, FAAOP, an orthotist at the Orthotic and Prosthetic Lab, St. Louis, received the Distinguished Practitioner award.
- Chad Duncan, PhD, and Susan Spaulding, MS, CPO, FAAOP, received Outstanding Educator awards. Duncan is an associate professor at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. Spaulding is a lecturer in the department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington.
- Stephen Schulte, CP/L, FAAOP, and Jerome Voisin, CP, received Clinical Commitment awards in recognition of their commitment to the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics (ABC) Code of Professional Responsibility. Schulte is co-owner of Prosthetic Care, Conyers, Georgia. Voisin, whose award will be presented posthumously, owned Acadian Prosthetics & Orthopedic Aids Houma, Louisiana, for more than 30 years before his death in 2015.
- Levi Hargrove, PhD, received the 2018 Research award, for his O&P-related research. He is the director of the Center for Bionic Medicine at the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab, Chicago, and an associate professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern University.
- Aaron Holm, founder and president of Wiggle Your Toes, received the Mohammed Amin award for humanitarian service to the amputee community.
- Jack Richmond, president and CEO of the Amputee Coalition, and Yeongchi Wu, MD, a faculty member in Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, will receive honorary academy membership in recognition of their knowledge of and dedication to O&P.
