Various news reports put the number of traumatic amputations that surgeons have performed on victims of the April 15 Boston Marathon bombings between six and 13. According to an April 17 article in The Wall Street Journal, “At least 13 people lost limbs, including five at Boston Medical Center, four at Massachusetts General Hospital, three at Beth Israel Deaconess, and one at Brigham and Women’s Hospital; another at Brigham’s Faulkner Hospital lost a portion of her foot in the blast.” O&P professionals know all too well, though, that the official number of amputations won’t be known for several months.
