Residual limb shape, suspension method, and socket design can vary considerably from one transfemoral patient to another.
The Ethnocare Overlay TF was developed with that variability in mind.
Rather than offering one universal shape, the TF range includes configurations designed to better match different prosthetic setups, helping clinicians integrate adjustable volume management without changing the patient’s existing suspension system.
Different Designs for Different TF Setups
For pin suspension, the Overlay TF uses a more tapered profile, reflecting the shape commonly seen in prosthetic setups where the residual limb narrows toward the distal end.
For vacuum and seal-in configurations, a more cylindrical profile can better accommodate the overall limb and socket geometry.
The objective is the same in either configuration: fill the available socket space with air as residual limb volume changes.
This gives clinicians flexibility when selecting an Overlay that will fit their patients perfectly!.
How the Overlay Works
The Overlay is worn over the patient’s liner and inside the socket.
Its integrated pneumatic cells allow the user to adjust socket fit throughout the day:
- When the socket begins to feel loose, air can be added.
- The air cells expand where there’s available space inside the socket.
- This restores contact and reduces unwanted movement.
The user does not have to remove his prosthetist in order to make adjustments; the integrated pump is designed to always be available and accessible for both Overlay TF and TT.
Designed Around Existing Suspension Systems
The Overlay does not replace the patient’s suspension system. It is an addition to it.
It is designed to integrate with common transfemoral configurations, including:
- Pin-lock and lanyard systems
- Seal-in suspension
- Passive vacuum
- Active vacuum
- Cushion liners and suspension sleeves
This makes it possible to introduce an adjustable volume management solution while maintaining the prosthetic setup the patient and clinician are already familiar with.
Alec’s Experience With the Overlay TF
For active transfemoral users, changes in socket fit can become especially noticeable during long days, physical activity, and changing environments.
Alec uses the Overlay TF to make on-the-go adjustments to his socket fit, helping him maintain greater contact with his socket as his residual limb changes throughout the day.
Tatum’s Story
For Tatum, the Overlay TF helps her manage socket fit throughout very active days. During her trip to Europe, she reached more than 12,000 steps per day, and the ability to adjust the Overlay gave her a way to adjust her fit on the go and increase the suction when her stump was shrinking.
Key Overlay Features
The Overlay was designed to provide adjustability while remaining simple to integrate into existing prosthetic care.
Also Available for Transtibial Users
The same concept is available with the Overlay TT for transtibial amputees.
This allows clinicians to consider adjustable volume management across both transtibial and transfemoral prosthetic care.
US Reimbursement Under L5657
The Ethnocare Overlay is recognized in the United States under HCPCS code L5657, providing clinicians with a dedicated reimbursement pathway for this type of volume-management solution.
Coverage and payment remain dependent on medical necessity, payer requirements, the patient’s insurance plan, and appropriate clinical documentation.
Available Through Major US Distributors
The Overlay is available to prosthetic clinics throughout the United States through SPS, Hanger, Cascade, PEL, and Empire Medical.
Clinicians can order through their preferred distributor or contact Ethnocare for assistance.
