Re: Bypassing Orthotists

Ms. Perrone,

You hit the nail right on the head. I think that state licensure is the answer. According to the laws that I’ve viewed, there could be jail time much less fines issued to the offenders that are practicing w/o a license.

The other thing to keep in mind is that we as practitioners have the right to choose where we purchase our products. If companies are sending out their sales reps and not providing QUALITY PROFESSIONAL QUALIFIED care, then I feel that it’s our duty to avoid funding their schemes and also to inform our/their referral sources of the true nature of their schemes-$$$. A 2 week over coffee/sales pitch reinforced crash course including A&P, kinesiology, and recommended money applications does not create a qualified provider. They are usually just looking for someone that looks good in a dress or a suit, un-educated yet has the gift of gab. I’m not only offended by that reality but downright scared for the patient.

Tony Barr is quite correct when he stomps about state licensure laws. GO TONY!!

Great question,

EBI, Donjoy, Marquis — all have put items on patients using

And not just low-level devices (stock and bill) but more complex items,
as well. Donjoy in Pittsburgh has been great with working together with
the orthotist community, but I’ve not seen as great an effort
Nationally. As long as they can bill Medicare, and every other provider
out there, I’m sure they will do this. My question to the group – WILL
LICENSURE HELP THIS??? For those of you in states that have licensure –
has it helped you and HOW has it helped?? I think it is important for
everyone to have a clear understanding of this and if it is of help,
then to get on the bandwagon and pay to get licensure in your state. We
do not have it yet – and I am curious as what those of you with it have
experienced.
