U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC), is currently accepting proposals for the 2010 Olympic Opportunity Paralympic Fund. The program will provide $1.25 million in grants to community-based organizations to create and expand Paralympic-sport and physical-activity programs for disabled veterans and disabled members of the Armed Forces.
Through this program, the USOC and its partner organizations intend to collaborate to increase the number and quality of opportunities for physically or visually impaired veterans to participate in physical activity within their home communities and in more advanced Paralympic sport programs at the regional and national levels.
“There is a great need to expand the availability of these types of programs at the community level for persons with physical and visual disabilities so that they can participate in sport,” said Scott Blackmun, CEO of the USOC. “These grants will allow organizations across the country to develop and enhance programs for disabled veterans and disabled members of our armed forces to participate in daily physical activity in their communities.”
The USOC will award community-based programs with grants ranging from $10,000 to $50,000 each from a pool of up to $1.25 million. Organizations eligible to apply for the funds include Paralympic Sport Clubs, USOC member organizations, military and veteran organizations, and other community-based organizations that provide Paralympic sports programming or opportunities to veterans with physical and visual disabilities.
