Those who are responding to our Thanksgiving Day poll question—What’s your favorite thing about the holiday?—are showing a pretty even split between all the choices—everyone loves gathering with family and friends, watching football, and those Thanksgiving leftovers.
On a more serious note, an article in the December issue of The O&P EDGE highlighting how inappropriate behavior interferes with the functioning and flow of the workplace shaped last week’s poll question—What are types of this conduct that you’ve experienced in your O&P practice?
Of those responding, 46 percent said intimidation is the biggest problem; 28 percent said sexual harassment; and three percent said physical abuse and threats.
Twenty-three percent chose other. One of those respondents said, “Sexism is a major issue faced by female clinicians all around—with patients and with coworkers.”
“I’m not sure if this falls into the category of intimidation, but I think there’s also a lot of pressure for clinicians to overwork themselves and it can lead to unhealthy outcomes like burnout and not performing at your best,” the commenter continued. “There can be pressure from the company related to marketing and billing, mental and emotional pressure to take care of so many people who rely on you for their ability to walk [among other physical functions], situational pressure to work longer hours to cover for being chronically short-staffed [definitely not enough clinicians in the field right now].”
