Practitioners who work with patients with diabetes have unique challenges and opportunities to advocate for those patients. As a practitioner treating this population in an underserved and remote area, Marc Tessier, CPO(c), has seen firsthand the difference proactive care and education make in the lives of patients. Tessier practices at Nipissing Orthopaedic Lab, based in North Bay Ontario, about four hours north of Toronto.
In addition to working in his own practice for 33 years, Tessier travels throughout Northeastern Ontario to conduct clinics that provide services to Indigenous peoples and smaller communities that do not have easy access to proper diabetic foot care or to a certified orthotist. In a typical rotation he spends two days with adults and one day with children at a pediatric orthotic clinic.
