Urethane, silicone, and thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) are
materials that can be used to fabricate prosthetic liners. A liner
can be uniform in thickness or taper from its distal to proximal
ends. A common question among less experienced practitioners
is, “What are the differences between liners?” It may not
be immediately clear whether silicone, TPE, or a different material
is warranted in a given situation. Without guidance, the
wide variety of manufacturers, liner properties, and materials
available, as well as patients’ differing skin types and fitting
concerns, can make choosing a liner difficult for a practitioner
who is beginning in the profession.
