Although there are other codes and circumstances that warrant the use of narratives on a claim, not otherwise classified (NOC) codes are the most frequent and sometimes the most frustrating. In most cases, the payment of the claim hinges on the words or abbreviations you add to Box 19. Did you use the right abbreviation? Do they know what you mean? Did you use the correct billed amount? These questions are not fully answered until you receive that remittance advice. However, our hope is the following information will better prepare you for billing these codes and reduce the frequency with which NOC code claims have to be resubmitted or appealed.
