The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released revised January 2021 Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes for two prosthesis codes, L-8701 and L-8702.
Most HCPCS code updates became effective January 1, however, the two corrections from CMS were for the descriptions for HCPCS codes L-8701 (Powered upper extremity range of motion assist device, elbow, wrist, hand with single or double upright(s), includes microprocessor, sensors, all components and accessories, custom fabricated) and L-8702 (Powered upper extremity range of motion assist device, elbow, wrist, hand, finger, single), which are retroactive to October 1, 2020. Coding for MyoPro assistive devices, for example, are coded using L-8701 and L8702.
CMS advised that the appearance of a HCPCS code is not an indication of coverage by the Durable Medical Equipment Medicare Administrative Contractor.
