Available data suggests that over 40,000 Americans are affected by a major upper-limb amputation (ULA). In a country of over 300 million people and compared to the larger prevalence of lower-limb amputations, this is a relatively small patient population. Major ULA most frequently results from traumatic injury that often requires an individualized approach taking into consideration other associated injuries. As a consequence, healthcare providers frequently lack the clinical experience and specialized expertise needed to provide a high-level of evidence-informed care for these patients.
