Capretta had several recommendations for improving the Medicare program, according to a MedPage Today article.
“I think we should put into Medicare automatic adjustments, so that we don’t get in a position where we’re always chasing our tail about how to get it solvent and sustainable,” he said. “We ought to make some goals fiscally about how much we are willing to spend and then adjust things accordingly on a bipartisan basis—taxes, premiums, benefit design, and what we pay the providers should all be on the table and [we should] adjust them all very modestly going forward. Real Medicare spending can still go up a lot, and you can still keep the system solvent and affordable if you just make these adjustments built in.”
